In Phnom Penh’s growing international labor market, it has become a basic requirement to be able to communicate in English. This is why it is important for students like Srey Mach, who grew up in rural areas and didn’t have the privilege of receiving high-quality school education, to have access to English language classes to prepare for a prosperous career.
Thomlang – Cambodian Youth Support used your donations to support Srey Mach in enrolling in an English language program at Beltei International School in Phnom Penh. After the completion of all language levels, she will receive an official language proficiency certificate, which will help her apply for full-time positions in the future.
Srey Mach currently works as a teacher assistant for elementary school children at an international school, which CYS also helped her apply for. Through our professional mentorship, she learned how to create a CV, send out applications and prepare for job interviews. On the weekends, she studies Administration at university through a scholarship that she received from another non-profit organization.
Read her story in her own words below:
Hello!
My name is Srey Mach and I am 23 years old. I have been an orphan since I was 8 years old. My mother died in 2008 and my estranged father died when I was in 10th grade in 2017. After my mother died, I grew up in an organization in Kampot with my sister. After I graduated high school I left the organization and came to study in Phnom Penh.
These days, I work and study in Phnom Penh. I work at a private school called New Way School as a primary school teacher for young Cambodian children. On the weekends, I study Bachelor of Administration at university.
In addition to working during the week and studying on the weekend, I really want to take English classes because I think that my language skills are almost non-existent. I want to learn more to make it easier to work in international teams.
I would like to thank Cambodian Youth Support for helping me to study English at Beltei International School. I study every day from 5:30 to 7pm. You also supported me with buying a moto for transportation. Without this moto, I would not be able to commute to my English school or my university.
I really thank Cambodian Youth Support because your help is what is leading me to a successful future. When I think about my future, I want to have a good and safe job in an office as part of the Admin team.
In the end, I would like to thank you again and wish this organization a lot of success, so that you can continue to help Cambodian children in need of education.
With Love,
Srey Mach
CYS will support Srey Mach all the way through graduation. With this English language proficiency certificate she will better her qualifications for future job applications.
