Chamroeun’s Bachelor’s Degree

While many young Cambodian adults dream of pursuing higher education at one of Phnom Penh’s many universities, most are not able to afford tuition fees and the cost of living in the ever-growing capital. This was the case for Chamroeun, who comes from a big family in rural Cambodia. Chamroeun’s parents are farmers, who have struggled to provide for their six children for many years. The now 20-year-old, however, was very determined to focus on his education and asked his older siblings, some of whom already have families on their own and are in the workforce, to send him pocket money every month, which allowed him to support himself through high school.

However, covering university tuition would have been too much of a financial burden for the family. This is the reason why Thomlang – Cambodian Youth Support stepped in to support Chamroeun to enroll in a Bachelor’s program at the National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia.

Read his story in his own words below!

Hello dear supporters, how are you doing?

My name is Chamroeun. I am 20 years old and I have five siblings. I am the second youngest child in my family. Last December, I graduated high school. It was already difficult for my family to support my high school education, but my older siblings tried to help me as much as they can with their salaries.

After high school, I really wanted to continue my studies at university. I strongly believe that university gives you a wide range of knowledge and experience. The major that I chose at NPIC is mechanical engineering because I like this subject a lot. Being in a Bachelor’s program in mechanical engineering will allow me to have great opportunities in the future. Right now I am in my first year and I am already taking classes in Mechatronics, Dynamics, Basic Electricity and Electronic, Computer, English, and other subjects.

I would like to thank you for supporting me. I am very happy to be able to study at NPIC University. My family is too poor and can’t afford to pay for my tuition or my school supplies. That is the reason why I am dependent on your support, and I appreciate you a lot for giving me this opportunity.

Thank you so much!
All the best from,
Chamroeun
