Repairing Chovey’s Father’s House

After having lost her mother at a very young age, Chovey grew up in an orphanage in Kampot. While being separated from her sister and her father, she was given a second chance at life and access to education.

Now, more than a decade later, Chovey is working for an international NGO and just recently obtained her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Management and Economics in Sihanoukville. While she is thriving at her job and has a big career ahead of her, she also carries the burden of being the sole provider for her father, her sister, and her 2-year-old niece.

Chovey’s childhood home, where her father still lives, was deteriorating. At the beginning of 2021, she committed to renovating the entire house in order to provide a safe space for her remaining family. Thomlang – Cambodian Youth Support stepped in and supported Chovey through the coverage of half of the costs to prevent her from sliding into debt.

Please read her story in her own words below:

Dear Thomlang – Cambodian Youth Support,
Dear brother Julian,

I would like to tell you about the house from my father. It was a very old house, most of it was broken and unstable. The stairs fell off and the roof was leaking during raining season. All in all, it was not a safe place for my small family and I worried about them and their health every day.

This is the reason why it was my goal to repair the house this year so that my father has a safe home. I work very hard at my job but my salary is not enough. I also have to support my sister and my little niece, so I didn’t have enough money to pay for the repair costs alone.

I am so thankful that this NGO helped me with the rest of the costs. For the last months, we have repaired everything and now it is a beautiful house. I hope you can come to visit us there one day in the future.

I would like to say thank you very much for helping to repair my father’s house. We are very happy to have a safe and stable home now.

I wish you all the best and I hope you stay healthy and successful in your lives.

In love,
Chovey

Additionally to the repair work that was done on the family’s house this year, CYS was able to cover several medical bills for a family member that had gotten into a traffic accident and was in need of medical treatment.
