Srey Nek received support last year for the continuation of her high school studies. With the completion of her final state exams in late December, the 20-year-old is ready to start university.
Thomlang – Cambodian Youth Support will continue to support the young high school graduate through the coverage of her university tuition and all living expenses for the entirety of her studies. The first step in this process, before Srey Nek could enroll in a university program, was finding a new and safe home in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh.
This meant that Srey Nek had to say farewell to her mother Phors and her younger brother Yean, whom she had lived with in a small tin shack an hour outside of Cambodia’s coastal city of Sihanoukville.
Thomlang – CYS organized everything for the aspiring university student to move to Phnom Penh. We established an agreement with the French NGO Enfants d’Asie, which, besides various other projects, runs a student dorm called Borey Niseth.
Borey Niseth provides a safe space for about 150 underprivileged students in the center of Cambodia’s busy metropolis. This helps students adapt to the new stage in their lives in Phnom Penh and have a smooth transition from childhood to adulthood. They are surrounded by other ambitious scholars and are able to connect with people their age whose life stories they can relate to.
The students are able to purchase affordable meals at Borey Niseth’s cafeteria, engage in various sports activities on the dorm’s premises and get to live in a gated space that is protected by security guards at night.

Srey Nek enjoyed a warm welcome in the student dorm and already feels at home there. She has met several new friends and is slowly but surely building a social circle full of friendly faces and positive influences. Through the joint support of Thomlang – CYS and Enfants d’Asie, Srey Nek will be empowered to develop her personal life and her education.
