Chamnan’s Psychology Major

Having gone through a lot of loss and trauma himself, Chamnan developed an early interest in psychology. The 22-year-old has a deep desire to work with orphans or children, that grow up under challenging circumstances, in the future and wants to give them the attention and treatment, that he himself was never privileged enough to receive. He is very concerned about the fact that Cambodia lacks mental health awareness as well as resources for people in need of psychological assistance, and wants to become a therapist in order to help people and have a positive impact on society.

As an orphan, however, Chamnan has been struggling to cover his university tuition in the past two years. Thomlang – Cambodian Youth Support will lift this burden off of the aspiring psychologist’s shoulders through the coverage of his tuition as well as living expenses and rent.

Please read his story in his own words below:

Hello dear supporters,

My name is Chamnan and I am 22 years old. I come from Trapeang Chhouk village in the Kampong Cham province in Cambodia. My parents passed away when I was very young. I have 3 siblings, one sister and two brothers. I am the youngest in my family.

I am currently living in Phnom Penh to continue my studies at my university. Now I am in my third year of psychology at the Royal University of Phnom Penh.

The reason why I want to study Psychology is because I want to help myself with mental problems and learn to manage emotions. But most importantly, I want to help people in society with their mental health. My future goal is to work for an organization that works with children in remote areas in Cambodia.

I need an NGO to help me because I lack money to pay for my university, and my siblings don’t have enough money to support my life. Since I came to Phnom Penh, I have been struggling to pay for my daily expenses, like rent, medicine, and transportation in Phnom Penh to commute to university, work, and other places.

This is why I would like to say a big thank you to this NGO for supporting my Bachelor’s degree and my daily life. It gives me a lot of relief and motivation to know that I can rely on this NGO to help me in my daily life, and also give me great opportunities in the future to study more!

Thank you so much!
All the best,
Chamnan
