Soban’s Graphic Design Class

After graduating from Secondary School, Soban completed a two-year vocational training at the Don Bosco Technical School in Phnom Penh. For the past two years, Soban utilized his training in his job as a machine operator. Although this is a stable job, Soban was discouraged by the limited growth potential in his role. The role provided him limited opportunity to adjust his schedule, to receive promotions or raises. These conditions made Soban feel discouraged and worried about his career prospects.

Soban came to CYS and asked us to help find new career fields for him to venture out into. He nurtures a love for the English language, photography, and computers. We were able to use those interests to connect him with a graphic design training program.

You can read Soban tell his story below:

Hello everybody!

My name is Soban and I am 21 years old. I don’t have parents but I have grandparents.

I completed vocational training in welding 2 years ago and now I work as a machine operator at Crown Company in Phnom Penh. But I am not happy with my job because I worry that I cannot improve a lot in the future. I have been working here for almost 2 years, but my salary doesn’t increase and there is no promotion in sight. This is why I want to change my career, and I have one more dream: graphic design. I like graphic design a lot because I like to be creative and I think the jobs in this field are very interesting. I would be very happy to have a job in the future where I can edit photos and videos and make cool designs for businesses.

So I would really like to study more. However, my salary is not enough to afford a laptop, let alone graphic design lessons.

And my grandparents are very poor. They never had enough money to support me in my life.

This is the reason why I feel so lucky and privileged that I have an NGO like Cambodian Youth Support by my side to support me when I need it the most. Thank you so much for helping me to study!!! I appreciate you all so much.

With Love,
Soban

CYS used your contributions to support Soban by supplying him with a new laptop and paying his tuition fees. Now, he is ready to take lessons throughout the year. Soban will continue to work as a machine operator until he gets his certificate later this year, at which point CYS will assist him in finding a job as a graphic designer.
